How do I link to Library Resources in Canvas?

Answer

The easiest way to provide access to library resources in Canvas is to link directly to the resource. This way you ensure that you are complying with copyright laws.

If your resource is available via IUCAT, then the IUCAT link in the browser bar will work for on- or off-campus users. They will be prompted for their IU Login by clicking the link to the resource in IUCAT.

If you want to link directly to an e-book or article (for example, in EBSCO, JSTOR, or ProQuest) then you would want to make sure you are using the persistent or stable URL.

  • In EBSCO databases - look for "Permalink"
  • In ProQuest databases - look for the "Copy URL" icon
  • In JSTOR - the URL is under the bibliographic information, just above the PDF text.

You also need to add the proxy prefix – which is https://library.indianapolis.iu.edu/cgi-bin/proxy.pl?url=. The proxy prefix will allow off-campus users to access the resource. Adding the proxy does not hinder on-campus access, and is necessary for off-campus access.

You might also find the EBSCO or ProQuest LTIs helpful. These external tools in Canvas allow you to link directly to library resources from either EBSCO or ProQuest databases. Doing the work for you!
